ABU JA'FAR MUHAMMAD IBN MUSA al-KHWARIZMI

(c.786 - 850)

_

Al-Khwarizmi is best known for his work in mathematics. For centuries after his death, his works were still among the most comprehensive published on this subject. By studying translations of the Greek manuscripts collected at the House of Wisdom (Baghdad), al-Khwarizmi and his associates were able to build upon earlier mathematical models.

It is through al-Khwarizmi’s texts that we derive two basic mathematical terms. ‘Algebra’ comes from Hisab al-jabr w'al-muqabala, the first and most important of al-Khwarizmi’s work.  His second work on the Hindu numbering system (where the numbers 0-9 would eventually be derived), Algoritmi de numero Indorum, gave birth to the term ‘algorithm’.
